Every few weeks we like to share a post to let you get to know the PRC staff just a little bit better. This week, we want to introduce you Liz Helland, the Development Manager at PRC.
Thanks Liz for taking the time to answer a few questions for the blog. So what first attracted you to PRC and your role here?
I knew I would love the staff members at PRC. I could see right away the staff at PRC really enjoyed working together and each person was passionate about the work they do. I immediately was attracted to my role because I was excited to tackle marketing the services PRC offered to the community and I really enjoy fundraising and event planning. It’s been a great fit.
Would you share a little about you background, both educationally and professionally?
I graduated from Malone University in 2010 with a degree in Business Administration. I worked in enrollment and marketing at a charter school for 1 year before moving to State College and stepping into my position at PRC.
The Helland family has a new addition. Would you share a little bit about her?
Sure! My husband, Chris, and I welcomed our daughter, Jani Rose, into our family on October 11th this past year. She has been such a gift to us! We’re finally starting to get some sleep and trying to be the best parents we can be to her. She’s just learning how to babble and coo, which is absolutely adorable. We are in love!
Congratulations, she is adorable! As a new mom and a professional, we imagine there isn’t much free time. But when you have some, what hobbies do you enjoy?
When I do have free time, I enjoy reading, running, crafting, and spending time with my husband, family, and friends.
State College is a great place to live. What is your favorite thing about being here?
I love living in a place that people love to be! Moving into the area just 3.5 years ago, I wasn’t quite sure what living in a college town was going to be like. However, I found the town to feel like home right away. The locals were always so excited when they would find out we were new to town, and they immediately wanted to tell us all the great things about the area. It’s great to live in a place that has a lot of town pride.
Here’s where we start to really get to know the real you. What is your favorite TV show or Movie?
While I was on maternity leave with Jani, I watched the entire series of Gilmore Girls – and loved it! My husband and I really like Parks and Rec. I can’t get enough Amy Poehler in my life!
Do you have a most embarrassing moment you would share with our readers?
Okay then. Maybe that is something Liz will share in a more private setting.
Moving right along, what are some things that make you really happy?
Spending time with my husband and my daughter makes me really happy! I also love exploring new cities, attending live shows, and simply hanging out with friends. I think that we have such a wonderful community of friends here in State College. Simply living life with encouraging and fun people makes me really happy.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I know I’m a new mom, but I have to say I am most proud of our new baby girl. Having a baby is quite the accomplishment! Here she is:
What were the last 2 books you read?
This is a bad question for me because they’ve all been about childbirth and parenting… J I’m hoping to crack open “Redeeming Love” soon by Francine Rivers. I love her work.
If you could eat one food for the rest of your life without getting sick of it, what would it be?
Definitely Ice Cream. Or pizza! Probably both… I am obsessed.
At least you didn’t say pickles. Changing direction, (pun intended) if you could hop on a plane today and fly anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I think I’d go to Europe. I’d love to cozy up in a coffee shop and people watch.
What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?
Slow down, don’t stress over the small stuff, and be content in the moment right now. I have a tendency to be a little “high stress” sometimes and worry about the future, so it’s always good for me to be told to slow down and enjoy the here and now.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I have climbed the 2nd tallest mountain in the continental United States and I have my motorcycle license.
That is awesome. Liz, thanks for taking the time to answer these questions for us. We’ll be back in a few weeks with another Q&A with our staff. Until then, remember if you’re planning a Harley Ride don’t forget to invite Liz.
